Homemade Strawberry Orange Creamsicles

March 17, 2021 by Heather Smoke 7 Comments

For an easy and refreshing treat, these homemade strawberry orange creamsicles satisfy my sweet tooth when I want something cold, simple and sweet. As lovely as they are to look at, these orange creamsicles are even more delicious to eat. They’re made with sweetened cream, flavored with a bit of orange liqueur and vanilla, orange juice and fresh strawberries. It only takes minutes to make these creamy strawberry orange popsicles, and the hardest part is waiting for them to freeze!

What is a Creamsicle?

A creamsicle is an orange popsicle with a creamy ice cream center. By sweetening heavy whipping cream with sweetened condensed milk, we’re making a smooth, creamy ice cream base for this orange creamsicle recipe. The cream mixture is then blended with orange juice for the creamy orange layer, and fresh pureed strawberries for the pink strawberry layer. I just love the way the soft sherbet colors blend together like watercolor paints.

See the recipe card at the end of the post for the full ingredients list and instructions.

Ingredients

  • Heavy Whipping Cream. The fat and richness of heavy whipping cream gives these creamsicles a beautifully smooth and cream texture.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk. Sweetens the creamsicles, while promoting a creamy texture.
  • Orange Liqueur. A little orange liqueur adds a bit of flavor, while the alcohol lowers the freezing point of the mixture so that the creamsicles are creamy, rather than hard and icy.
  • Vanilla Extract. Flavor.
  • Orange Juice. Orange juice combined with the cream and milk makes the creamy orange layer.
  • Strawberries. For the strawberry layer, I pureed fresh strawberries and blended them together with the cream and milk.

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together the cream, sweetened condensed milk, orange liqueur and vanilla extract.
  • Whisk together 1/2 cup of the cream mixture with the orange juice, then pour into the popsicle molds.
  • Whisk together the remaining cream mixture with the pureed strawberries. Pour into the popsicle molds, letting the orange layer and strawberry layer swirl together a bit.
  • Place the lid on your popsicle molds and insert popsicle sticks.
  • Freeze the creamsicles until solid, about 6-8 hours. Once frozen through, unmold the creamsicles. Wrap the creamsicles individually in wax paper, then store in a freezer bag or airtight container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use another berry or fruit other than strawberries?

You can absolutely substitute other fruits or berries for the strawberries. Blackberries and raspberries would both be fantastic, but you might want to strain the seeds. Peaches, cherries and apricots would all be delicious.

Is there any substitute for the heavy whipping cream?

Yes and no. The high fat content of the heavy whipping cream is what makes these popsicles creamy, rather than icy. You can certainly substitute half and half or table cream, but the texture won’t be the same. For a vegan option, coconut cream would be the best substitute.

Is the orange liqueur necessary?

Since alcohol doesn’t freeze, the orange liqueur lowers the freezing point of the mixture to keep the creamsicles creamy instead of icy. It’s a common ingredient in homemade ice cream, and the alcohol content is negligible (only 2 teaspoons divided between 10 popsicles), but you can leave it out, if you prefer.

How should I adjust this recipe to make just orange creamsicles without the strawberries?

Just eliminate the pureed strawberries, and increase the orange juice to 1 1/4 cups. Whisk all the ingredients together, pour into your popsicle molds, and freeze.

What popsicle mold do you use for your creamsicles?

My popsicle mold is very similar to this one.

I have not tried the silicone version of this popsicle mold, but it has pretty good reviews.

How many creamsicles does this recipe make?

This recipe makes 10 creamsicles.

What’s the best way to unmold creamsicles?

With my popsicle mold, I usually have to run warm water around the mold, then gently wiggle the popsicle sticks to loosen the popsicles.

How should I store homemade creamsicles?

After unmolding the creamsicles, you should wrap each one individually in wax paper. Store the wrapped creamsicles in an airtight container or freezer bag.

These are SO GOOD! So refreshing and they will be perfect on a hot summer day. I will for sure be making these again! I even made a mistake and didn’t mix the strawberries with the correct 1/2 of the cream mixture and they were still so good!
